Choosing between an openable vs sliding wardrobe is one of the most common decisions in any bedroom design. Both look great when done well, but they suit different rooms, budgets and habits. Here is how our designers help clients decide.

Openable vs Sliding Wardrobe: The Quick Answer

  • Choose sliding if your bedroom is compact, the bed is close to the wardrobe, or you want a sleek, modern look with large mirror or glass panels.
  • Choose openable if you want full access to every section at once, a lower budget and the simplest long-term maintenance.

Space: Which Wardrobe Needs Less Room?

An openable wardrobe needs clear floor space in front of it for the doors to swing, usually around 2 feet. In a small bedroom, that space can clash with the bed or a study table.

A sliding wardrobe needs no swing space at all. The shutters move along a track, so you can place the bed much closer. This is why sliding wardrobes are popular in compact apartment bedrooms in Bengaluru.

Cost: Openable vs Sliding Wardrobe Price

Sliding wardrobes cost more. The sliding mechanism, top and bottom tracks, and the larger, heavier shutters add to the price. In our projects, a sliding wardrobe typically costs around 35 to 40% more per square foot than an openable wardrobe of the same size and finish.

If you are working to a budget, openable wardrobes give you more storage for the same money. Read our 2 BHK vs 3 BHK interior cost guide to see how wardrobes fit into a full home budget.

Access and Storage

With an openable wardrobe, you can open every door at once and see everything inside. This makes it easier to organise clothes, add internal drawers and fit accessories such as trouser pull-outs or tie racks.

With a sliding wardrobe, you can only access one section at a time, because the shutters overlap. Good internal planning solves most of this, but it is worth thinking about how you use your wardrobe every morning.

Durability and Maintenance

Openable wardrobes

Openable wardrobes have fewer moving parts. With good soft-close hinges from brands like Hettich or Hafele, they work smoothly for many years and are simple to adjust.

Sliding wardrobes

Sliding wardrobes depend on the quality of the track and rollers. A cheap mechanism can jam or derail over time, so this is not the place to save money. Keep the bottom track clean to keep the doors gliding smoothly.

Design and Looks

Sliding wardrobes give a clean, uninterrupted front that suits modern and luxury interiors, especially with lacquered glass, mirrors or aluminium profile shutters. Openable wardrobes offer more variety in shutter designs, handles and frames, and suit both classic and contemporary homes.

Do Not Forget the Loft

Whichever type you choose, take the wardrobe up to the ceiling with a loft. Lofts cost much less per square foot than the main wardrobe and are perfect for suitcases, blankets and seasonal clothes.

Our Recommendation

For a master bedroom with plenty of space, an openable wardrobe gives the best value and storage. For compact bedrooms or where the bed sits close to the wall, a sliding wardrobe is worth the extra cost. Many of our clients mix both in the same home.

Every wardrobe we build uses CenturyPly plywood and branded hardware, with a 30-year warranty. For more on wardrobe ergonomics, the Bureau of Indian Standards publishes standards for furniture and fittings.
